So, my Mom wanted me to fill out the census…
One of the first questions is “is person number blahblah of hispanic or latino origin?”
Why the hell does that even matter? I believe it is discriminatory in a sense. I will admit, I am half hispanic. My Mom is second generation Salvadorian. Her father moved here LEGALLY from El Salvador back in the 50’s to escape the war and corruption there. I have been asked before on school surveys if I am of hispanic origin, I use to put ‘yes’ because I was part. When I did so, the next semester I was given a class that was part spanish, I was talked to in spanish, AND sort of shoved aside because of that. I was really pissed. When I took my GED, they asked if I wanted in spanish, too. I was pissed at that. For one, I can’t understand, nor speak spanish. My Mom doesn’t have an accent, she doesn’t speak it often, and she honestly doesn’t look it. None of my aunts and uncles do, either. Back to my original point, I don’t understand why it’s mandatory for one to answer all the question’s completely on there. I normally nowadays just put ‘white’ as my ‘race’ on any surveys. I’ve been told that it’s all just ‘statistics’ when they ask these questions, as to see how many percentages of whites, hispanics, blacks, or asian’s there are in a city. However, I’ve heard and seen some pretty fucked up things according to this. Such as, values of housing and property going down a couple percentile according to race, more police officers and law enforcement agencies in an area with more minority race, etc. I don’t want that to happen to my city. Albeit it is small, I’d rather not have any one here be harassed or discriminated against because of race. If I could, I would skip the question on the census. However, I cannot. I will put that I am white, and my Mom is hispanic. If I see or get ANY kind of difference in lifestyle, treatment, etc, I will fight back and say racial discrimination. I already have issues with age discrimination out where I live since a lot of people my age out here are drug addicts( I don’t do anything ), so if I had to deal with another type, I would definitely react with furious anger.
If any one else had this issue, someone please write some sort of letter to the senate, president, whatever, that this should stop. America is FOR the people…and WE the PEOPLE believe that this is stupid. I know plenty of people who agree with me. We should be viewed as people, not different races. America is a giant country of immigrants anyway. No one should have to suffer for being different. I agree that the issue of illegal immigration should be dealt with, but I don’t think people of hispanic origin be put down for what others may do. I don’t like how “mexican” has become some sort of derogatory term. A lot of people assume if you are hispanic, you are automatically ‘mexican’ rather than Cuban or Guatemalan.
More and more people are opening up their eyes to our disgusting government and their ways. I think and hope one day, when I’m older, that this entire situation will be solved. Ignorance has clouded our blue planet and now, people have been poisoned. Those given an anodyne become immune to the smoke and their eyes are opened. One day, the rest of the world will realize that no one has to be hurt. It is in our nature to discriminate, but if I, and many others, can overcome this primitive mindset, then there is no excuse for anyone else not to. All I ask is for acceptance.
